THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR ATTORNEY

An attorney must charge for his time and advice and counsel.

My charges are commensurate with my experience and success in the courts and are in accordance with the current market rates.

Attorneys are obligated to provide billing periodically to the client to inform the client how the money, which they have paid, is being used by the attorney.

I always provide backup documentation to all of my billing to all of my clients so that they do not only see an entry on a line, but a full and detailed explanation of what work was performed.

Attorneys cannot charge a client for time spent in explaining or discussing the bill for legal services.

An attorney cannot withhold a client's file for non-payment.

If there is a fee dispute, the client has the right to demand binding fee arbitration during which time the attorney must release the file and can, with the permission of the Court, obtain a lien on the proceeds of the settlement or the outcome of the law suit.

It is unethical for an attorney to hold back transfer of the file to the new attorney because there is a fee dispute with the client which is the subject of arbitration or litigation.

When a client hires my firm, the client is informed that the client has become the employer and my firm is the employee and there are strict guidelines of conduct and performance imposed upon us both.
